Admittance procedure

The University of Miskolc announces an application for doctoral training within the framework of accredited doctoral schools.

The Antal Kerpely Doctoral School of Materials Sciences and Technologies starts doctoral training in a state-supported and with the obligation to pay tuition fees.

The system of doctoral training has significant changes since September 1, 2016

The most important changes are the followings:

  • The doctoral program requires a minimum of 240 credits, the training period is eight
    semesters.
  • The doctoral program consists of two phases: the first four semesters are the „training and research” phase, and the second is the „research and dissertation” phase.
  • At the end of the fourth semester as finishing the training and research phase and as condition for the start of the research and dissertation phase, a complex exam must be completed which evaluates the study and research progress.
  • The PhD student must submit the doctoral dissertation within three years after the complex exam.
  • The monthly amount of the state-supported PhD student scholarship is 140000 HUF in the training and research phase and 180000 HUF in the research and dissertation phase.

Admission requirements and conditions:

  • For doctoral program those persons may apply who has university degree, or in the final year university students.
  • The condition of admission is a certificate of at least „good” or „cum laude” university degree or master’s degree.
  • The research of the chosen topic requires a state-recognized intermediate level C (complex) or an intermediate B2 complex type language exam.
  • The candidate must have an adequate level of professional knowledge of the chosen topic.
  • Preference will be given to an applicant with an initial certified scientific/professional result (publication or any scientific award).

Documents to be attached to the application:

  • lCopy of transcript;
  • Copy of diploma (if the student has already received it);
  • CV;
  • Copy of a document proving language skills;
  • Copies of articles;
  • A description of the idea of the doctoral topic (research plan);
  • Certifying the transfer, the admission procedure fee.

Criteria for assessment:

  • At the oral entrance examination, the Selection Committee is convinced of the candidate’s professional orientation, ideas related to his or her doctoral work, the scientific activities and language skills.
  • The Selection Committee is elected by the Doctoral Council of the Discipline, its number of members is at least 3, the supervisor who has an applicant in the given admission procedure cannot be a member.
  • During the exam student’s language skills and attitude are assessed. In the exam, the Committee evaluates the Candidate’s performance with a score of up to 100, on the basis of which it ranks them and recommends or does not recommend their admission.
  • At least 60 points are required for admission. Achieve of 60 points does not mean automatic enrolment.
  • The candidates’ rank is submitted to the Doctoral Council for admission. The Doctoral Council of Discipline suggests for admission, takin into account the scholarship limits received from the University Doctoral Council and other possibilities and capacities of the Doctoral School. Admission is decided by the University Doctoral Council.
  • The student before the state exam may be admitted only conditionally.
  • The admission can only be finalized if the university degree is rated at least „good” or „cum laude”.
  • The admitted full-time student is entitled to a scholarship. Admitted state scholarship students will receive dormitory placement in justified cases and will be paid a fee next to the student status.

Admission procedure fee is 9000 HUF.

The second, research and dissertation phase of the doctoral program may also be entered by a person who has individually prepared for the degree, if he/she fulfilled the general requirements of admission. Applications for admission can be submitted until April 15 or November 15 of the current year. Based on the supportive opinion of the designated Selection Committee the complex exam can be conducted.
The research and dissertation phase begins after the admission decision of the University Doctoral Council. The requirements for the complex exam are contained in the functional rules of Doctoral Councils.
